Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Discover how Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) helps you resolve trauma by changing how distressing memories and sensations are stored in your brain.

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps you resolve distressing thoughts, images, and sensations by replacing them with positive ones. At Fruition Counselling, we guide you through this process in a safe, supportive space — without requiring you to relive or retell the details of your trauma.

ART works quickly. Many clients notice changes in just one to two sessions. This therapy is designed to be fast, focused, and easier on both the client and the nervous system. You remain in control at every step, while your therapist helps you shift what’s stuck and begin building emotional clarity.

Comprehensive Support Through ART

Clear Structure That Supports Change
Follows a consistent, research-based method that helps reduce symptoms in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy, without losing the safety and personalization of one-on-one support.
Relief Without Retelling Your Story
You don’t have to talk through the trauma. ART lets you process difficult experiences without sharing the details. The focus stays on what’s stuck, not on what’s already been lived.
Focused Therapy Rooted in Proven Techniques
Combines guided imagery, eye movements, and elements of Gestalt and psychodynamic therapies, delivered in a client-led, calm environment.

Helping You Resolve Persistent Symptoms

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is designed to help clients who feel stuck in patterns of distress, even after trying other types of therapy. You may benefit from ART if you're experiencing:

  • Recurring nightmares, flashbacks, or intrusive memories
  • Feeling constantly on edge, hyper-aware, or easily triggered
  • Difficulty calming your nervous system after stressful events
  • Ongoing panic or anxiety that doesn’t respond to logic or relaxation
  • Emotional numbing, hopelessness, or low motivation
  • Guilt or shame tied to a past experience
  • Avoidance of certain places, people, or situations due to past trauma
  • Struggles linked to specific fears, phobias, or performance anxiety
  • Internalized stress from learning or developmental challenges (e.g., dyslexia)

Many clients come to ART after feeling like other approaches helped "somewhat" but not enough. ART is a way to access and resolve what’s still holding on, without needing to explain everything or relive it.

Structured Process to Shift How the Brain Stores Distress

ART uses guided eye movements and visualization to help your brain reprocess a distressing memory. During a session at Fruition, you’ll be supported by your therapist as you bring the memory to mind and replace negative images with positive ones of your choosing.

You don’t have to describe what happened in detail. The process is client-led, procedural, and calming. Many clients describe feeling emotionally lighter and more at ease, even after a single session.

FAQs

Browse through frequently asked questions to learn more about how I can help you navigate your therapeutic journey.
What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

ART is a short-term, evidence-based therapy that helps your brain change how it stores distressing memories and sensations. It uses eye movements and guided visualization to reduce symptoms tied to trauma, anxiety, and other challenges — often without needing to talk about the experience in detail.

How is ART different from regular talk therapy?

ART follows a structured, step-by-step protocol. Unlike talk therapy, you don’t have to explain or relive your trauma. You’ll process difficult experiences internally, using visualization and eye movements, with your therapist guiding the process.

What kind of issues can ART help with?

ART is helpful for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Post-traumatic stress (PTSD)
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Intrusive thoughts and flashbacks
  • Grief and loss
  • Depression
  • OCD symptoms
  • Phobias and performance anxiety
  • Emotional responses linked to learning difficulties, like dyslexia
Do I have to talk about my trauma or explain what happened?

No. One of the key strengths of ART is that you can process distressing experiences without needing to talk about them. You stay in control of what you share, and your therapist will guide the session without asking you to explain personal details.

How many sessions does ART usually take?

Many clients experience noticeable improvements within 1 to 5 sessions. Because ART is a short-term, focused approach, it tends to produce results more quickly than traditional therapies.

Is ART safe and evidence-based?

Yes. ART is recognized as an evidence-based treatment by the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12 of the American Psychological Association). It is used by licensed therapists across North America and has a growing body of research supporting its effectiveness.

What happens during an ART session?

You’ll identify an image or memory that’s connected to distress. Your therapist will guide you through a series of eye movements while you visualize and gradually shift how the experience is stored in your mind. You don’t need to talk unless you want to, and you set the pace.
